SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- Voters are heading to the polls to decide key contests, including control of Congress, the next governor and a proposal on whether to bail out BART. Polls opened at 7 a.m. and will remain open until 8 p.m.

Santa Clara County has more than 1 million registered voters. Data from the county's Registrar of Voters shows that about 32% of ballots have already been cast through early voting ahead of Election Day.

Most of the early ballots received were dropped off, while fewer than 40% of those ballots were mailed in.

For residents voting on Election Day, Santa Clara County has established more than 100 voting centers. Voters can submit their ballots in person, by mail or by placing them in an official drop box, with options available to track ballot status throughout the process.

Voters who missed the standard registration deadline, which takes place two weeks before Election Day, can still cast a ballot using conditional voter registration. These ballots are processed and counted once the county elections office verifies the voter's registration.

Polls close at 8 p.m., and election results will begin coming in after voting concludes.
