Democratic incumbent Cory Booker won election Tuesday to the U.S. Senate representing New Jersey, defeating Republican Justin Murphy.
Booker won a third full term over Murphy, a little-known attorney who emerged from a crowded field in his party’s June primary.
Booker also faced several third party candidates, including:
Booker has served as a senator for New Jersey since 2013.
He grew up in northern New Jersey and received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University before he went on to study at the University of Oxford, and then Yale Law School, where he graduated in 1997.
Booker has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump.
He still lives in Newark, where he previously served as mayor. His website claims he has “dedicated his life to fighting for those who have been left out, left behind, or left without a voice.”
New Jersey has not elected a Republican senator since 1972.
