Drexel suspends two fraternities amid sexual misconduct, hazing reports

Two fraternities at Drexel University in Philadelphia have been placed on interim suspension as the university investigates reports of potential sexual misconduct and hazing.

Pi Kappa Phi and Lambda Chi Alpha are both under interim suspension while the university reviews the allegations, according to a statement from Drexel.

While the suspensions are in place, both fraternities face restrictions on their activities, including new member activities and events involving alcohol, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The university said its Student Conduct office, Office of Civil Rights Compliance and Drexel Police are coordinating the review to determine appropriate next steps.

“Consistent with University practice, matters of this nature are reviewed in coordination with Drexel’s Student Conduct, Office of Civil Rights Compliance and Drexel Police to determine appropriate next steps,” the university said in its statement.

Drexel said the offices remain in regular communication throughout the investigative process to ensure university procedures are followed.

The university also emphasized its commitment to student safety, saying it does not tolerate sexual misconduct or hazing.

The interim suspensions remain in effect pending the outcome of the investigation.

This isn’t the first time Drexel has suspended a fraternity amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

In May 2017, the university placed Tau Kappa Epsilon on interim suspension while campus police investigated reports of two sexual assaults at the fraternity’s off-campus house on Powelton Avenue.

Resources for victims of sexual assault are available through the National Sexual Violence Resources Center and the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline at 800-656-4673.
