Fremont Korean restaurant Revel to close after 16 years

Fremont Korean restaurant Revel (401 N 36th St) has announced it will close in December after 16 years.

Revel opened on N 36th St in Fremont in 2010 but moved temporarily to South Lake Union while the Cedar Speedster was built. It reopened in 2020 back in its original spot in Fremont.

Revel has had its fair share of accolades over the years. In 2017, Anthony Bourdain visited Revel for his TV show Parts Unknown. It also has multiple James Beard Award nominations: It was nominated five years in a row for Best Chef: Northwest (2014–2019) and nominated for Outstanding Chef in 2022.

Co-owner/chef Rachel Yang and her husband and co-owner Seif Chirchi announced the news on Instagram. “There are no words to describe what this feels like yet not enough words to tell the stories,” the post reads.

They didn’t state a reason behind the closure, but explained that it’s time for something new.

“We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for [an] incredible 16 years and staying with us through every iteration. And we are sorry. After 16 years of relentless hard work, love, and evolution, it is time for Revel to close its chapter.”

They added that for the next six weeks, they’ll bring back a “retrospective” menu with classics they say have been staples over the years, such as the corned lamb salad and Dungeness crab noodle.

The post hinted at a new venture.

“It is hard to imagine what comes next when you are in the middle of mourning something you gave 16 years of your life to. But quietly, out of that sorrow and reflection, something deeply personal, passionate, and meaningful began to take root—something we feel is worthy of following Revel.”

No news yet of what that venture will be, but we’ll keep an eye out and let you know.
